![]() | It is hard to believe that it is 50 years since Tom Gordon stuck his foot
through the ceiling of the new gym at Mt. Doug. Those were wonderful years
and it will be great to relive some of the memories when we get together
this June. I spent a year at Victoria College before heading across the water to U.B.C. the big city lights did something to me and I took two years to complete first year engineering. After that it was smooth sailing and I graduated with a bachelor degree in Civil engineering in 1961. Most of the intervening summers were spent in northern British Columbia working on survey crews or road construction. However I did spend the summer of 1958 in Victoria working for B.C. Tel with Don Hamilton. He introduced me to Julie Beecroft.; we were married in 1960 and spent the next few years travelling between Fort St. John, Prince George and Victoria on work assignments.

I started work with a Consulting firm, Willis and Cunliffe Engineering,
after graduating from university and stayed with them for 31 years. The
first few years we were pretty much on the move as noted before, but in 1964
we took up permanent residence in Terrace, B.C. for 6 years. We returned to
Victoria in 1970 where I worked at head office except for a 3 years overseas
stint in Indonesia. As an aside our camp in Indonesia was located in a small
village called Calang in the province of Aceh on Sumatra Island. The little
village was completely obliterated 15 to 20 minutes after the massive
underwater earthquake on December 26, 2004. We had a wonderful time in
Indonesia and made some good friends with whom we have been meeting every
two years. I left the engineering business shortly after returning from Indonesia and became the general manager for a highway maintenance contractor looking after provincial roads on south Vancouver Island. After losing the contract in 1996 we formed a new company and took over the road maintenance for two local municipalities who elected to privatize their public works. We have been most fortunate as one of the municipalities has made a determined effort to attract business and people. As a consequence the area has grown rapidly and we have been able to be part of that success story. I am still involved in the work on a full time basis, but I am also looking at ways to create more time for other activities. Julie and I have three children who have given us 6 grandchildren, the latest of which arrived in January 2004. Our oldest son is an engineer for Syncrude in Northern Alberta. Our second oldest son is a teacher in Nanaimo and our daughter runs her horse farm in Central Saanich. Looking forward to this June. Bob Noble |
